Here is a sharing of the process how my soundtrack for Halloween 2020 came about:
While Halloween is just around the corner, why not I mix something up for it?
What kind of tracks do you have in mind for a Halloween megamix? Certainly, I am not that keen on popular Halloween chart hits. Therefore, I compiled a list of iconic horrow movie themes and came up with the following list and their respective keys. This is always the first thing I did with a mix in mind. Some of the tracks didn't make it to the final mix.
Dbm Candyman
Dm A nightmare on Elm Street
Dm 28 Days Later
Dm Saw
Dm O fortuna
Ebm Tales from the Crypt
Ebm Goosebumps
Em Jason theme
F Poltergeist
Fm Phantasm
F#m Halloween
Gm Promise Silent Hills
Abm A Quiet Place
Am The Exorcist
Am The Fog
Bbm Psycho
There are many videos with TOP 10 horror movie quotes online that gave me ideas what is popular in the past and the vocals from these videos are extracted (without the background music) using an online tool called "Vocal Remover". This is how acapellas are extracted and most of the times are done pretty well.
Now let's start mixing. I started off with the Halloween theme as that is the most recognizable theme of the list. I have chosen instrumental Techno tracks for the background and then it is a matter of cut and paste with some effects or key shifts to fit with the vocal quotes and maintaining the flow of the mix.
In the process, I did encounter issues with the themes as most have variable bpm(tempo). I found a workaround by using those synthesia videos that teaches you how to play piano, and those has a fixed tempo. By adding some reverbs and delays, it sounded great in the end. Therefore, some of the themes are not from original soundtrack.
By the way, I bought a new vst called "Stutter Edit 2 by BT", it's 75% off at the moment. This is worth investing in and the stutter effects are out of this world! You should be hearing quite a lot of these in my future mixes.
Here is the final track listing featuring themes from:
